DIFFERENT MATERIALS, SURFACES AND COLOURS

kt.color

kt.COLOR sliding doors are currently available in 13 different pigment colors.

They come in the most beautiful colors we could find deep, harmonious and unique. They sparkle like fresh-fallen snow and shine like the moonlight. Paints for people who know that color is a quiet but highly influential presence that inspires us day and night. Paints for people who know that authenticity, beauty and creativity are the language of the soul, and that premixed colors, imitations and tinting systems inevitably miss these qualities.

Katrin Trautwein and her team at kt.COLOR produce these pigment colors in their factory, which is the only one of its kind in the world. Also unique worldwide are the sparkling, joyful paint colors that we make with exclusive pigments and ecological binders which you will find in every pail of our paints. They are crafted by hand from more than 140 different pigments. The raw materials come from chalk cliffs, ocher pits or mountain ranges.

kt.COLOR Bleu Nattier (KT 20.305) – NEW 04/2020

"A steely blue nuance with plenty of gray."

Reference - Plastor, color sampler, 1930
Spatial function - materialization
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

An impermeable, metallic quality characterizes this strongly grayed blue, making it a special case among the class of usually receding blue colors. The reference Nattier’s blue is based on was found on a color card from Le Corbusier’s estate. Jean-Marc Nattier, a French portrait painter, apparently used such a paint to depict the rich velvet of royal clothing. Le Corbusier used a similar shade for steel tubing. Nattier’s blue is too heavy to be used for a ceiling, but it can be used to impart a wall surface with weight and solidity.

kt.COLOR Burgunderrot (KT 10.001) – NEW 04/2020

"Intoxicating to all the senses, like the wine of Dionysus."

Reference - Paul Baumann, Neue Farbtonkarte System Prase, Sample No. 1325, 1912
Spatial function - materialization
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

The ancient Greeks already knew how to produce red dyes from Rubia tinctorum, or dyer’s madder. Even though it was very expensive to process these dyes, they spread throughout Europe following the Crusades in the Middle Ages. The industrial revolution led to the development of more lightfast alternatives to dyer’s madder, such as the one in use here. Burgundy red is a color of classic elegance that performs well even under artificial lighting, and in the shadows its noble effect is heightened.

kt.COLOR Gris clair La Roche (KT 26.012) – NEW 04/2020

"A gentle gray, as taciturn and silent as weathered cliffs."

Reference - Le Corbusier, paint sample Villa La Roche, 1926
Spatial function - differentiation
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

In his writings, Le Corbusier referred to gray as the color of serenity and as the antithesis to dynamic colors such as orange. A substantial number of gray wall samples found in his architecture testify to the importance that he attributed to this color. The reference this gray is based on corresponds to the second paint layer of a wall sample taken from the salon of the Villa La Roche. It was a glue paint pigmented with French chalk and ivory black. Reconstruction yielded this – a great color of discretion.

kt.COLOR Lux Guyer Saffa 11.5 (KT 08.009) – NEW 04/2020

"The silvery green of ornamental grasses growing by the pond."

Reference - Lux Guyer, SAFFA house, 1928
Spatial function - dynamic
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

Lux Guyer, born in 1894, was one of the first females with her own architecture firm in Switzerland. In 1928, she constructed a pre-fabricated wooden house geared to the needs of family living. A color concept based on striking, yet muted colors created tranquil spaces throughout the comfortable home. This grayish green was used on all four walls and on the sloped ceiling of an upstairs study. When the cupboard was opened, bright Poppy red beamed forth, a whimsical gesture that lightened the mood of everyday life.

kt.COLOR Terre d’ombre brûlée claire (KT 32.131) – NEW 04/2020

"Soft and compliant, as pleasing as sandstone in natural light. "

Reference - Le Corbusier, Salubra wallpaper, 1931
Spatial function - differentiation
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

Architects such as Walter Gropius, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier had this handsome color on their palettes. The umbers fulfilled the avant-garde’s requirement of being beyond decoration; they were deemed honest, tasteful and true. Yet this medium umber is more than a reminder of the past – its moderation in terms of hue and lightness allows it to be used to deepen space without making it too dark. By muting hard contrasts, Light burnt umber also offers a simple and pragmatic solution to a common design problem.

kt.COLOR Ultramaringrün (KT 04.004) – NEW 04/2020

"Ultramarine blue with a salutary note of green. "

Reference - Hans Kittel, Pigmente, 1960
Spatial function - dynamic
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

Ultramarine green is a sulfur-reduced relative of its famous blue brother, but fifty percent of the raw mixture is lost during pigment processing. This low yield may explain why the beautiful pigment has played such a subordinate role in the history of painting, even though it is as fascinating as ultramarine blue. Since all paints based on ultramarine pigments are luminous under conditions of low lighting, this bluish green serves architecture well on surfaces whose beauty would be sacrificed with the use of other green pigments.

kt.COLOR Gris blanc (KT 26.015)

"Soft and breezy, as graceful as the first signs of dusk."

Reference - Le Corbusier, paint sample Villa La Roche, 1926
Spatial function - atmospheric
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

Le Corbusier’s aesthetic characterizes even his most straightforward color concepts. They express his deep sense of respect for the harmonious color compositions in nature. He combined the gray on which Whisper gray is based with a deep burnt umber and an opaque gray-blue in the Villa La Roche in Paris. Color triads such as this one, which follow a general pattern of “achromatic light color + achromatic dark color + chromatic color,” are common in nature. Applied to architecture, these triads look classic and natural.

kt.COLOR Gris violet (KT 12.056)

"An imperial gray, splendid combined with light leather and wood. "

Reference - Wohnform, Constance, 2012
Spatial function - differentiation
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

An effective color design method involves differentiating surfaces by painting them with achromatic colors that vary in their degrees of lightness from white to dark gray. By consciously selecting warm or cold grays, it is possible to prevent excessively cool or homely combinations by balancing cold materials with warm shades of gray and warm materials with cool shades of gray. This color is a member of the cool gray scale. It is exquisite in combination with warm honey colors.

kt.COLOR Manganviolett (KT 09.024)

"An extravagant violet, it unfolds in space like heartfelt laughter."

Reference - Paul Baumann, Neue Farbtonkarte System Prase, Sample No. 1288, 1928
Spatial function - dynamic
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

Thomas Leykauf, a chemist in Nuremberg, developed a synthesis for manganese violet from manganese dioxide and phosphoric acid in 1868. The pigment was called Nuremberg violet, and it yielded both gorgeous purples and, with Zinc white added, pleasing tints. The pigment proved to be harmful to the environment, and a new formulation based on ultramarine blue and ruby red was developed. In keeping with Leykauf’s reference color, the new formulation is extraordinarily deep and vibrant even when used in the shadows.

kt.COLOR Bleu Charron foncé (KT 11.092)

"The sumptuous blue of the doorway in Corbu’s Maison Blanche."

Reference - Paul Baumann, Neue Farbtonkarte System Prase, 1912
Spatial function - materialization
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

This is a rare example of a blue with simultaneous red and green components. Surfaces painted with such blues appear to be solid and spatially present, rather than light and receding. This makes them useful for objects that need to look substantial; doors and bannisters, for instance: French chariot blue makes them look welcoming and trustworthy. Le Corbusier was well aware of such effects, as a similar color was found on the main entrance door and the bannisters of Maison Blanche, the house he built for his parents.

kt.COLOR Affoltern Rot (KT 32.095)

"Cinnabar red, the archetypical color of passion. "

Reference - Arthur Rüegg, parish house Affoltern, 2003
Spatial function - dynamic
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

Swiss red is a magnificent darker version of the color KT 32.090 Deep red. It is a potent vermilion red shade, with simultaneous tinges of blue and yellow. Such deep, physiologically pleasing red shades of color are formulated by adding generous amounts of natural, complementary green pigments to the red to balance the color. As is the case with all deep reds, Swiss red announces its presence in space with assurance, and surfaces painted with it magically attract attention.

kt.COLOR Vert olive (KT 43.6)

"A capricious green that shifts from blue in the morning to gold at night. "

Reference - Le Corbusier, Salubra wallpaper, 1959
Spatial function - dynamic
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

The origins of this interesting color can be traced back to a method traditionally employed by artists to mix sensuous olive colors by blending brownish ochre and cobalt green. Since a color will achieve a harmonious effect if it contains elements of all three primary colors, these ochre and green blends inevitably fulfill such a condition of harmony. Olive green’s reaction to changes in the daylight is unique – it shifts from a straw-colored, luminous yellow with a green hue to a strongly yellow, equally pleasing green.

kt.COLOR Jaune ocre (KT 08.004)

"An exceptional yellow that keeps its glow in shadowed spaces."

Reference - Le Corbusier, paint sample Maison Blanche, 1912
Spatial function - dynamic
Sensitivity to light - good under all lighting conditions

One of the rooms facing west in a villa built by Le Corbusier has walls painted with this color. It is made with ochre, umber and an inorganic yellow. These pigments contribute a significant share of gray to the formulation. The gray lends it depth and fullness even when it is used on shadowed surfaces. The yellow is surrounded by KT 11.092 French chariot blue, KT 32.000 White light, KT 32.141 Medium native umber, and KT 32.013 Pearl gray. These cooler colors additionally lend a warming effect to Yellow ochre, and the overall color composition resembles a beautiful landscape.

Iron rust

Iron rust sliding doors give your xilobis furniture a highly unique character. These one-of-a-kind pieces are painstakingly made by hand. The individual iron sheets are stamped, folded, fitted with recessed grips and polished. Then they are exposed to the sun and rain in the Ticino region for around 4 months, being brushed and turned every 3 weeks. Weather influences their color, tone and texture. Finally, they are heated to approx. 250°C in an oven, then treated with a special blend of oil, wax and tar to prevent them from further rusting.

Slate

Slate sliding doors bring a touch of nature into your home. The veneer is not made from imitation stone. Therefore, there are natural differences in color and texture between the individual doors. The veneer, which is about 1.5 mm thick, is glued to a base plate made of Alucobond*, creating impact-resistant doors. The slate veneer has a slightly rough feel, and is available in three varieties: black slate, jeera green and autumn rustic.

* ALUCOBOND® is a composite panel made of two aluminum layers and a synthetic, polyethylene core. It has an impressive balance of weight and stiffness. ALUCOBOND® is recyclable, meaning that the core material and aluminum cover are returned to the materials cycle and used to produce new materials.

The word ORGANOID is composed of "organic" – in the sense of natural, untreated – and the suffix "-oid" (ancient Greek for similar). The natural surfaces contain 100% sustainability, authenticity, nature closeness and untreated natural materials.
Organoid natural surfaces are difficult to describe in words. You can hardly avoid touching them, stroking them and smelling them. A true experience for the senses.

The natural surfaces are glued to an Alucobond* composite panel with a self-adhesive film.

Some colors are more transparent than others and the color shade can be influenced by the color of the module.
